US Congress Expresses Concern Over Meta’s Cryptocurrency Plans

  • Democrat Maxine Waters sent an open letter to Meta.
  • In it, she drew attention to the fact that in 2023 the company filed five applications to register products and services related to virtual assets.
  • She expressed concern and demanded that the company clarify its position.

US House of Representatives member Maxine Waters sent an open letter to Meta’s CEO and COO. In it, she urged the company to clarify its plans regarding the cryptocurrency sphere and expressed concern about the organization’s expansion into this market.

In her appeal, Waters refers to Meta’s five trademark registration applications for goods and services in the field of virtual assets filed in 2023.

The company received a Notice of Allowance (NOA) for each of these cases. The firm can then confirm registration or request a six-month deferral.

The deadline for the first such notice expires on February 15, 2024. In her letter, Waters called on the company to clarify its plans and share details regarding the goods and services listed in the papers.

The politician also highlighted the Diem (Libra) project. This is a cryptocurrency project presented in 2019. The initiative faced a barrage of criticism not only in the US but worldwide. Later, Meta officially shut down the project.

According to Waters, she and her colleagues sent a letter back in 2019 condemning the launch of Diem. Like other politicians, she expressed concern about potential privacy and data protection issues.

The letter also states that Meta denied working with digital assets. Allegedly, a company representative made such a statement to the US Congress in October 2023.

Waters expressed doubt about the veracity of these words, noting that Meta did not close applications for trademark registration in the field of crypto assets. The company itself has not commented on the situation at the time of writing.
