  • An NFT called Genesis Cat was sold for $245,000 at a Sotheby’s auction.
  • The amount exceeded the estimated value of the lot by more than 12 times.

At the Sotheby’s auction held from January 12th to 22nd 2024, an NFT based on the Ordinals protocol was sold for $245,000. The digital artwork called Genesis Cat was created by Taproot Wizards team artist Francisco Alarcon.

It is known that the final bid for the Genesis Cat lot exceeded its estimated value, which ranged from $15,000 to $20,000, by more than 12 times.

A Sotheby’s representative told CoinDesk that the NFT was sold as part of the Ordinals Curated Sale auction, where a total of 19 lots were exhibited, bringing in around $1.1 million.

Taproot Wizards Marketing Director Dan Held said the proceeds from the Genesis Cat sale will be paid out to the project and artist.

It is worth recalling that on December 13, 2023, a Sotheby’s auction ended, where three NFTs from the BitcoinShrooms collection were sold for $450,000.

We also previously reported that in 2023, Sotheby’s sold NFTs worth about $35 million.
