According to Decanter, the company announced the sale of 12 bottles of single malt whisky from a collection made in 1974. The distributor used artificial intelligence to design the labels, each symbolizing a different element: earth, fire, water, wood, air, time and so on.
It is reported that sales will be made through The Whiskey Exchange Cabinet, a blockchain-based trading platform. Buyers will receive a digital certificate of authenticity in the form of a non-replaceable token (NFT) that confirms ownership of each bottle of whiskey sold. It will also allow the provenance of the rare drink to be traced, The Glenlivet said in a statement.
The drink will go on sale Feb. 21 at a price of about $43,000 per bottle. Meanwhile, buyers won’t be able to get their hands on it until the summer following the release of the firm’s anniversary collection.
“As we celebrate The Glenlivet’s 200th anniversary, this rare collection shows a glimpse into the future and offers whisky enthusiasts a dip into the evolution of luxury investment,” said company spokesman Kevin Balmforth.
According to the source, a bottle of The Glenlivet 80-year-old whisky was sold at auction in 2021 for a record £150,000 (about $189,000 at the time of writing).
Note that this is not the first time blockchain technology has been used in this area. In June 2022, startup MetaBrewSociety announced the opening of the world’s first brewery managed by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).
In February 2023, Nokia leveraged the power of the meta universe to share brewing experiences between breweries in Germany and Australia.
